Today is National Sorry Day. It is a day when we reflect, remember and recognise the pain and suffering applied to members of the Stolen Generation, when they were forcibly removed from their families by previous Governments.
In February of this year, Prime Minister Rudd gave a formal apology to the Stolen Generations on behalf of the Government and people of Australia. This apology was an important first step on the road to fixing the rift between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, but is is not, and was not, the final solution.
The Bringing them Home report clearly indicated that dealing the loss and hurt caused by the trauma of forced removal is a necessary step in the healing process, and a major social determinant of poor-health. These recommendations outlined clearly that compensation was required, including financial reparation, and so far, the Rudd Government have declined to follow these recommendations.
The theme of National Sorry Day this year is ‘The Apology - Building a Bridge of Respect Together’. It is important that we do not forget what has happened, and work towards equality, respect and tolerance for all.
The Australian Greens again say Sorry.
